I love meetings

by Catherine Malchaire

We should organise more meetings! And yes, it’s the only way to tap into collective intelligence.

Obviously, you don’t just do it any which way. In ParticipAgile, this is called the 3 energies: coordination, decision, creativity. For it to work, you don’t mix the three.

  • First, all follow-up points (coordination). And just like that, it’s out of the way. Be careful not to let this drag on for hours. It is just a quick sharing of information that’s useful to the participants.
  • Next, everything related to decision-making. Not the kind of things that require hours of discussion, save that for the brainstorming section. Let’s say 5 minutes max per decision. Done and dusted.

Now, before moving on to the brainstorming points (creativity), how about a short break? And if these can be the subject of separate meetings altogether, even better.

  • We can finally channel our energy into points that require real thinking. Now that everyone is in the same type of energy, we can get the best out of collective intelligence.

At 9 CUBE, we have “a lot” of meetings, 1 hour max each. Just one fixed meeting, on Monday afternoon. We track action items and plan the rest of the week, along with all the brainstorming sessions that allow us to move forward on various topics. Each meeting has its purpose, and every participant contributes actively.

Does your company suffer from a severe case of meeting illness? Do you want to bring some order to it all so your meetings actually become effective? Why not start by structuring your meetings around the 3 energies.
