The 5 Dysfunctions of Lencioni, Level 3: Commitment to Decisions! 👌
In Lencioni’s model, we learn that without trust and in the absence of disagreements, it is impossible to rally the troops behind a decision.
As a reminder, what are the key principles of decision-making?
✔️ Absence of compromise: Do not seek compromise at all costs. The best decision is not the one that takes into account a bit of everyone’s viewpoints, but the one that is best for achieving the company’s objectives. If the team cannot decide, it is up to the manager to do so.
✔️ Clarity: Do not leave a meeting without ensuring that what has been discussed is recapped and understood by everyone. Until it is clear, continue. And remember, the absence of a decision is also a decision.
✔️ Communication: Agree on what needs to be communicated to the teams and ensure that each manager communicates what needs to be done quickly (within 48 hours).
Easy! Yes, but no! Let’s not forget that we are human beings. Making a decision to avoid consensus is not easy for everyone. This is where the Enneagram is enlightening. Some personalities make decisions easily. Here are the six reasons why others have more difficulty:
↣ Wanting to keep harmony in the group. Deciding means risking upsetting some people.
↣ Wanting to please everyone. And yet, by seeking compromise, you are not doing anyone a favor.
↣ Lack of self-confidence. The belief that you do not have the skills to decide.
↣ Fear of risks. What if it’s the wrong decision?
↣ The need to have a lot of information. The belief that you need to know everything before deciding. And since there is always more to discover!
↣ Fear of missing an opportunity. Choosing means giving up something else.
